Fire Safe 3.1

Stickers for Fire Safe

Every extinguisher you tag becomes its own status page. Hold any phone to the sticker, or scan it with the camera, and it shows what the unit is, when you serviced it, when it is next due, and your phone number. Here is what to buy and how to fit it.

That is the address on every sticker. Nobody needs the app, an account or a login to open it.

NFC stickers: buy the on-metal kind

An ordinary NFC sticker does not work on a steel cylinder. The metal kills the signal, and the phone sees nothing. It is the single most common reason people decide NFC “does not work”.

Buy stickers described as on-metal or anti-metal. They carry a thin ferrite layer that keeps the antenna working against steel. Expect 50p to £1 each.

TypeOn-metal / anti-metal
ChipNTAG213 or larger
Size25 to 30 mm across
FacePET or laminated

A PET or laminated face survives kitchens, plant rooms and outdoors. Paper-faced stickers do not.

What to search for: “on-metal NFC sticker NTAG213 25 mm”. If the listing does not say on-metal or anti-metal, it will not read on an extinguisher.

QR labels as well

iPhones older than the XS, and some Androids, cannot read an NFC tag without an app. Every phone can scan a QR code with its camera. So give every unit a QR label as well as NFC, and anyone who taps or scans gets the same page.

Fire Safe prints the QR labels for you, a whole site at a time.

  • Avery L7159 sheets, 24 labels per A4, 63.5 × 33.9 mm
  • For kitchens and plant rooms, a weatherproof polyester sheet in the same L7159 layout
  • Each label carries the unit’s own code, so it only ever opens that unit’s page
  • Print from Tag units in the app: Stickers, then Print QR labels
Simplest of all

Pre-coded stickers

A pre-coded sticker has the NFC already written and the matching QR printed on the face. Peel, stick, open Fire Safe, scan it, pick the unit. Nothing to write, nothing to print, and it works on every phone.

Step 1

Peel and stick it on the unit.

Step 2

Open Fire Safe and scan it. The app asks which unit this is.

Step 3

Pick the unit. Its page is live from the next save.

Fire Safe 3.1 supports pre-coded stickers out of the box. Where to get them will be listed here as packs are tested.

Where to put it

Do

  • The flattest part of the body
  • The same position on every unit, so anyone can find it
  • Wipe the surface first, press for thirty seconds, leave for an hour before the first tap
Never

  • Over the rating label
  • Over the serial number
  • Over the operating instructions
  • On a curve too tight to read: a 25 mm sticker needs a nearly flat patch

Test it

Lock your phone. Hold the top of it against the sticker. A link should appear at the top of the screen; tap it and the unit’s page opens. Then scan the QR with the camera and check you land on the same page.

  1. Nothing appears? The sticker is probably not the on-metal kind. Check the listing.
  2. Reads sometimes, not always? It is on a curve too tight to read. Move it to the flattest patch.
  3. Opens, but says no record yet?The unit has not been saved since it was tagged, or the phone that tagged it has had no signal since. It publishes by itself the next time that phone is online.

What the page shows, and what it never shows

The page carries what BS 5306-3 already puts on the maintenance label, and nothing about the premises.

It shows

  • The unit: type, size, make, model and serial
  • Its location text, as you typed it
  • Service dates, next due date and status
  • Your business name, address, phone and email
  • Your BAFE number and the technician’s name
It never shows

  • The site’s name or address
  • The client
  • The Responsible Person
  • Notes, defects, actions or photos
  • Any other unit or any other site

The page is a status page, not a certificate. Your certificates and the log book stay with the Responsible Person as before.

For the engineer

Tag it once. It answers for years.

Fire Safe writes the sticker, prints the labels, publishes the page every time you save the unit, and tells you which units are still waiting for signal. When you hand a site over, re-tag it and the old page freezes.
