Best PAT Testing Software in the UK: 8 Options Compared

PAT testing software keeps your appliance register, works out retest dates, produces the certificate and, ideally, brings the customer back next year. What you can buy splits into three kinds: Windows programs that download results from your tester, web systems you log in to, and apps on your phone. This guide compares the PAT testing software sold in the UK, what each one runs on and what it costs.

Every price below was read from the company's own website or App Store listing on 19 October 2026. Prices change, so check before you buy. One of the products, PAT Test Pro, is ours; it is listed on the same terms as the rest.

PAT testing software on a phone identifying a kettle from a photograph
The short answer
If your tester downloads its results, software that reads that tester saves the most typing. If you type readings in anyway, a phone app that fills in the appliance details for you saves more.

Decide which of those you are before comparing anything else.

What PAT testing software should do

  • Keep a register per customer and site. Every appliance with its ID, class, location and full test history.
  • Set retest dates. Ideally with the IET Code of Practice (5th Edition) risk approach rather than one interval for everything.
  • Get the readings in quickly. Either downloaded from a tester that stores results, or typed and filled in for you on site.
  • Produce a certificate the customer can file. Pass and fail clear on the front, failed items easy to find.
  • Bring the work back. A reminder before the retest is due, to you or straight to the customer.
  • Label and find appliances. Barcode or QR labels you can scan next year.

How to choose

1

Start from your testerIf it stores results and you test hundreds of items a day, look first at software that downloads from your model. If you read the screen and type, the time goes on describing the appliance, and that is what a photo or barcode fill saves.

2

Do a real job on the trialTest twenty real appliances, print the labels and send the certificate to yourself. That tells you more than any feature list.

3

Look at the certificate your customer getsIt is the only part of the software they ever see, and the thing their insurer asks for.

4

Check what brings the customer backA reminder that reaches the customer before the retest date is worth more than any report.

Questions

What is the best software for PAT testing?

It depends on how you test. If your tester stores its results, software that downloads from it, such as PATGuard Cloud (Standard plan and above) or SimplyPats, saves the most typing. If you read the screen and type, a phone app saves more: KEWPAT is free, PatCert is £50 plus VAT a year, and PAT Test Pro fills in the appliance details from a photo. The side by side table above compares all eight.

Is there free PAT testing software?

Kewtech's KEWPAT app is free. Most of the others offer a free trial, from a demo version to a month.

Can PAT testing software download from my tester?

Some can. PATGuard Cloud (Standard plan and above) and SimplyPats download from a wide range of testers, and KEWPAT connects to Kewtech's SMARTPAT. Phone apps such as PAT Test Pro, PatCert and Tradecert work with any tester by entering the readings on the phone.

Do I need PAT testing software or will a spreadsheet do?

A spreadsheet holds a list. It does not set retest dates per appliance, produce a certificate, print labels or remind the customer, and it is easy to lose last year's history.

Can I do PAT testing from my phone?

Yes. PAT Test Pro, KEWPAT, PatCert and Tradecert all run on a phone, and Patly and PATGuard Cloud run in a phone's browser.
