Frequently Asked Questions

How often does PAT testing need to be done?
There is no fixed legal interval. The IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, 5th Edition, sets intervals by risk: what the equipment is, the environment it lives in, how often it is used and who uses it. A drill on a construction site is not a desk lamp in an office. PAT Test Pro has the Code's risk assessment built in, and there is a free version of it further up this page, so you can work out an interval and record the reason for it on the certificate.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement in the UK?
PAT testing itself is not named in law. What is law is the duty: the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment to be maintained so as to prevent danger, and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 puts that duty on employers, landlords and anyone in control of a premises. Inspection and testing is the recognised way of showing you have met it, and a dated record is what an insurer, an enforcement officer or a client will ask to see.
Do landlords and holiday lets need PAT testing?
Landlords in England must ensure electrical installations are safe and are inspected at least every five years, and the same duty of care covers the appliances they supply. For a furnished let, a holiday let or an HMO, testing the appliances you provide and keeping the record is the practical way to evidence it. PAT Test Pro keeps every appliance under the client, so on the return visit you can see exactly what is due at that address.
How much does PAT testing cost per item?
Price per item is set by the engineer, not by any standard, and it usually falls as the job gets bigger because the visit is the expensive part. What PAT Test Pro does is make the paperwork stop costing you anything: the appliance details fill in from a photograph, the certificate and the labels come out of the same job, and the invoice can be raised from it. On a hundred appliance job that is the difference between an evening of typing and none.
Which is the best PAT testing software?
It depends on whether you want to be tied to a tester. Seaward's PATGuard Cloud runs in a browser from £84 a year plus VAT and works with manual and downloadable testers. Megger's CertSuite is a yearly subscription per user and comes with the PAT250. SimplyPats is a one off Windows only licence from £480. KEWPAT is free on iOS and Android and works with any tester for manual input. PAT Test Pro is the one built for iPhone, iPad and Mac with the camera doing the data entry. Is there PAT testing software for Mac?
Yes. PAT Test Pro runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and one subscription covers all of them on the same Apple Account. Most PAT testing software is Windows only, so if you work on a Mac your usual choice is a browser based system or a virtual machine. Here the job you start on site is the same job you finish at the desk, and your clients and appliance history follow you between devices through your own iCloud.
Is there a free PAT testing app, and what does PAT Test Pro cost?
PAT Test Pro is free to download and comes with a seven day free trial with nothing held back. After that a subscription is needed to send and save certificates, monthly or yearly, with unlimited certificates and no charge per certificate or per appliance. Appliance Vision scans use tokens, which come in packs in the app. The current prices are shown on the App Store listing, because that is the only place they are ever up to date.
Can I print PAT test labels and stickers?
Yes. Tap info on an appliance to create a PAT test label carrying the Appliance ID, the appliance, its location, the test date, the result, who tested it and your company, with a QR code alongside it. The label prints on any AirPrint printer, or you can save it to your photos and send it on. It shows the real result, so a failed or untested appliance can never leave with a pass on it. Printing a retest date on the label is a setting and is off by default, in line with the Code of Practice.
Can I get a PAT testing certificate template or example?
You do not need a template. PAT Test Pro produces a finished portable appliance test certificate as a PDF, with the tested, passed and failed summary on the front page and the full appliance register after it, around forty appliances to a page. It carries your company details, your scheme logo, the test instrument serial and calibration certificate number, any limitations you agreed, and the declaration citing the 5th Edition. Failed items print on their own photo evidence page with the picture you took.
Can I import a PAT testing record sheet or spreadsheet?
Yes. If a client sends you their appliance list as a CSV file, open it in PAT Test Pro and it becomes a new job with the columns matched for you. Your existing jobs are never changed, and a list covering several sites lands as one job per client. Going the other way, you can export the record as a CSV with every column the register holds, for a client who wants it in a spreadsheet, and the Asset Record prints the register on its own as a PDF.
Does it work with any PAT tester?
Yes. PAT Test Pro takes your readings from any PAT tester, whatever the make, because you are not downloading from the instrument. Choose your instrument once from Verifi on the Contractor Details screen and the make, model and serial number fill themselves in on every certificate, with the calibration record behind them. There is no hardware to buy and nothing to pair.
Does it work offline?
Yes, for the testing itself. Certificates, appliances, clients and labels all work with no signal, which is the normal state of a plant room or a basement, and everything catches up through your own iCloud when you are back in range. The one thing that needs a connection is an Appliance Vision scan, because the image is analysed off the device.
What is Appliance Vision?
Appliance Vision is the camera doing the data entry. Photograph the appliance, including the plug, the cord and the body, and it identifies the item, fills in the description and the class, suggests the fuse rating against Table 10.6 and assesses the cord and plug condition. On a Class I item you can photograph the open plug as well and it checks the wiring and terminals. The confirmation screen shows its working, and the app is explicit that the analysis is advisory only and the competent person makes the final pass or fail decision. The photograph stays with the appliance and prints on the failed appliances page.
How do I start a PAT testing business?
Get competent first: the Code of Practice expects the person testing to understand what the readings mean, not just to press a button. Then you need a tester, insurance and a way of issuing records a client will accept. The record is the part people underestimate. A business lives on repeat work, so what matters is knowing what is due, for whom, and when.
